Trenton,
NJ - Governor Jon S. Corzine and First Assistant
Attorney General Anne Milgram announced
today that the Attorney General’s
Office - Division of Criminal Justice has
awarded more than $980,000 in Federal Violence
Against Women Act (VAWA) money to strengthen
victim service programs in New Jersey.
According to Criminal Justice Director Gregory
A. Paw, the Division of Criminal Justice
has distributed $983,409 to 23 organizations
throughout the state. The VAWA grant, which
is administered by the Division of Criminal
Justice - State Office of Victim Witness
Advocacy, is awarded for a three-year grant
cycle. The recipients of the grants receive
up to $45,000 per program, and must re-apply
for the grant each year.
“The
grants announced today will help ensure
that victims and witnesses have the necessary
support when they need it most,” Governor
Corzine said.
“By
providing nearly $1 million in funds to
these 23 organizations, the Attorney General's
Office is ensuring resources are available
to women who are victims of crime,"
Milgram added. "We are committed to
assisting these women when they are most
vulnerable.”
The VAWA grant is used to develop, expand,
and strengthen victim services programs,
including sexual assault and domestic violence
programs. The money is also used to develop
or improve delivery of victim services to
racial, cultural, ethnic, and language minorities,
and provide specialized domestic violence
court advocates in county courts where a
significant number of protection orders
are granted.
The Violence Against Women Act was established
as part of the Violent Crime Control and
Law Enforcement Act in 1994 and was re-authorized
by Congress in 2000 and 2005. Each year,
VAWA funds are appropriated by Congress
and distributed to the 50 states through
a formula grants program to support services
to victims of domestic violence, sexual
assault, stalking and dating violence.
