Atlantic
City, New Jersey – Troopers from the
New Jersey State Police Auto Unit –
Document Fraud Squad, and police officers
from the Egg Harbor Township Police Department,
arrested five people who allegedly brokered
deals to allow individuals to receive a
New Jersey Digital Driver’s License,
without the proper documentation. The brokers
would bring their clients to the Cardiff
Agency in Atlantic County, where they would
secure a NJ Digital Driver’s License
bypassing the mandatory identification requirements.
Charging upwards of $7,000.00 per license,
the brokers would provide their clients
with an avenue to receive a NJ Digital Driver’s
License. The avenue came in the form of
two Motor Vehicle Commission clerks at the
Cardiff Agency in Atlantic County. The clerks
would disregard the strict laws demanding
proper identification and issue the clients
a NJ driver’s license.
The
brokers, Samuel Pelaez-Garcia, Luis Matos
and , along with two Motor
Vehicle Commission employees, Lynette Daniel-Peterson
and Rosiland Magee, were arrested, charged
and lodged in the Atlantic County Jail in
default of $2,000.00 cash bail.
The investigation into the group’s
activities began in April 2007 and they
have been providing NJ Digital Driver’s
Licenses for the last year and a half.
“This
type of illegal activity compromises the
safety of the people of New Jersey,”
said Colonel Rick Fuentes. “Document
fraud is often the gateway to other criminal
activities, and enforcement at this level
can have a national impact,” he added.
With
full cooperation and assistance from the
Egg Harbor Township Police Department and
the Motor Vehicle Commission, the New Jersey
State Police was able to disable this illegal
enterprise. The investigation was conducted
by Detective I M. LaRosa, New Jersey State
Police, Detective Gary Rzemyk and Detective
Heather Stumpf, Egg Harbor Township Police
Department.
