FARMINGDALE, N.J. –The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Task Force is conducting an investigation of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on October 18, 2019, in Farmingdale, N.J. A male civilian, 38, was fatally wounded.

The decedent has been identified as Charles Tsakiris, 38, of 59 Walnut Street, Farmingdale.

According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting occurred at approximately 11:43 p.m. at the Walnut Street residence. Members of the Howell Police Department responded to the location as the result of a 911 call. Upon arrival, one officer approached the front door of the residence. Charles Tsakiris opened the door holding a bladed object. Tsakiris refused commands given by the officers, one of whom fired at Tsakiris, fatally wounding him. Tsakiris was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, Senate Bill 1036, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.

Another incident at the same residence is also being investigated. A female civilian, 40, Teresa Oshel, who also resided at the house, was found deceased within the bathroom of the residence. A third individual Jeffrey Tsakiris, 36, was taken to the hospital and was treated for injuries.
