List the words found in the Pinelands Listening Vocabulary on the board. Ask students to give their best answers as to what each of the words mean (they may know the correct answers for some of the words). Of the remaining words that are unknown to the students, assign each student a few words (this will depend on how many of the words they already know, as well as the teachers assessment of the abilities of the students) which they will listen to learn about as they re-view the audio-visual program "The New Jersey Pinelands, Our Country's First National Reserve". Before showing the audio-visual presentation, direct the students to listen closely for their assigned words during the presentation and try to discover clues about their meaning. Suggest they listen for definitions, context clues, synonyms, descriptions or examples. Encourage students to take notes when they hear reference to their words. After showing the presentation, discuss the meaning of each student's word or words. Distribute arts and crafts materials and direct students to illustrate one (or more) of their words-you may consider distributing copies of the Pinelands Listening Vocabulary to the students in case they need to recheck their words' definitions. EVALUATION: 1. Partner off students and have them quiz each other on their words. 2. Have a definition bee. 3. Provide a written quiz to see how many words students have learned.
FOLLOW-UP: 1. Ask students discover through research if there are any other National Reserves in the United States. Report on where they are located. 2. Discover what other United Nations designated "biosphere reserves" exist in the world. Report on where they are located.
