Available in the Visitor Lobby, Discovery Den and some gallery spaces, Small Explorers Museum Family Guides are designed with children ages 0-5 in mind. Each page highlights an object in the collection along with questions to help our youngest visitors learn new words, explore and observe. Families are welcome to take these guides home, they also includes a recommended book you can find at your local library and an activity you can do at home
The Small Explorers Series is for children 6 months to 5 years old with their caregivers. Each month the program explores a different theme through stories, crafts, and play. The program is 45 minutes long and begins promptly. It’s held the third weekend of each month, on Friday at 2:00 pm, and Saturday at 10:00 am & 12:00 noon in the Discovery Den. Visit our natural sciences play space, designed just for families with children ages 0-8. Explore nature in New Jersey through touchable specimens, games, books, puppets, costumes and more! Adult supervision in this self-guided space is required.
The New Jersey State Museum will offer Scouting Astronomy & Geology on Saturday, May 11, 2019 and Scouting Archaeology & Astronomy on Saturday, October 19, 2019.
During Scouting Geology and Archaeology sessions, you learn about the earth and the history of its human inhabitants from the Museum’s geologists, paleontologists, and archaeologists and find out what these professionals do. Museum staff will be on hand to guide you through the State Museum’s collection of specimens, tools and maps. Don’t forget to bring your own collections if required for your badge.
In Scouting Astronomy, you will explore the constellations and how to find them in different seasons, as well as learn to use the Big Dipper to pinpoint the North Star. You will also learn to read star maps and locate stars of different colors.
Participation will assist you in fulfilling many of the requirements for badges and other programs in Scouting.
Space is limited and advance reservations are required. Cash payments cannot be accepted.
