Three Easy Scenic River Rides

If you’re seeking cycling tours with a lower degree of difficulty, consider any of these three river rides. These routes meander along scenic, relatively low traffic roads with few if any hills. In fact, multispeed bicycles are not a necessity.

Since these routes traverse only a couple of roads at most, detailed written route directions are not provided. The map should provide sufficient detail for locating the route.

Canal Road
Canal Road is an easy bike ride that rolls along the Delaware Raritan Canal between East Millstone and Rocky Hill. The road parallels the canal and offers scenic views. Parking is available in several places indicated on the map.

You can ride both directions on Canal Road or add some variety by making a circuit along Montgomery Avenue in Rocky Hill, and River Road and Route 206 in Montgomery Township. This option has more traffic.

You can also ride along a portion of the Canal Towpath, an area which is also enjoyed by walkers and joggers.

Batsto to Bass River
If you’ve been itching to get out and explore the Pine Barrens a bit, here’s a great tour to get you on your way. Via Burlington County Routes 542 and 653, this route connects historic Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest and Lake Absegami Recreation Area in Bass River State Forest. See the Pine Barrens River Ramble Tour Guide for details.

While the roads here may be flat, during the summer it’s good to know that you can cool off with swimming and refreshments at Lake Absegami. On the return trip, the Bulltown Road loop or the New Gretna loop will add some variety to the route.

Lamington River Valley
Just a few miles west of where Interstates 287 and 78 intersect, you’ll find tree-shaded Black River Road, which follows the course of the meandering Lamington River and offers many scenic views. The road connects the quaint village of Pottersville with the hamlet of Lamington, and passes by horse farms and stately homes.

The Lamington River is a tributary of the North Branch of the Raritan, and serves as the boundary line between Somerset and Hunterdon counties.
