Property Tax Reimbursement Checks to be Mailed July 15

The State Treasurer's Office announced today that New Jersey's eligible senior and disabled residents will soon receive their first property tax reimbursement payments authorized under the Senior Citizen and Disabled Property Tax Reimbursement legislation enacted on January 14, 1998. Checks will be mailed to recipients on July 15.

"The Property Tax Reimbursement Program helps residents of New Jersey on fixed incomes meet their property tax payments," said State Treasurer James DiEleuterio, Jr. "The reimbursement represents the difference between the amount of property taxes paid in 1997 and the amount paid in 1998." (See Attached Information)

The Property Tax Reimbursement Program is the first of three property tax relief checks which will be mailed to eligible New Jersey residents over the next two months. Homestead Rebate and NJ SAVER checks will be mailed in late July and mid-September, respectively. In all, the Division of Taxation will mail over $520 million in property tax relief to qualified residents through these programs.

"These three programs combine to provide the highest level of property tax relief in the State's history. They are a direct result of Governor Whitman's commitment to ease the burden of property taxes on New Jersey residents," said DiEleuterio.

The Division of Taxation reports that a number of incomplete applications have been filed by both Property Tax Reimbursement and Homestead Rebate claimants. This will result in delays in payment to those who have filed incomplete forms. The Division of Taxation will be sending notices requesting information to taxpayers who did not fully complete their applications. Individuals who receive a notice asking for information should return it as soon as possible to ensure that benefits are paid in a timely manner.

Eligibility requirements for all three property tax relief programs differ. (See Attached Information) Residents who want to check on the status of their claim for the Homestead Rebate can call the New Jersey Division of Taxation at 1-800-323-4400. Residents who would like to check the status of their Property Tax Reimbursement should call 1-800-882-6597.
