State Launches Paperless Filing Season

Looking for a fast and easy way to file your State income tax return? "New Jersey will enter the new millenium by offering its residents three paperless ways to file," said State Treasurer Roland M. Machold. Our Fast File programs, NJ PC File, NJ TeleFile and NJ E-File, will make filing less taxing in today's fast-paced society. "One of these state-of- the-art, high-tech filing methods is available to nearly all New Jersey residents and they will receive their refunds within two weeks of filing," added Machold. "These programs calculate the tax amount, tell the taxpayer how much their refund will be, or let them know how much they owe and how to pay. What could be easier?"

NJ PC File, New Jersey's newest paperless filing method, offers taxpayers a way to file their New Jersey resident return and homestead rebate from a personal computer. And this year, taxpayers can use NJ PC File to file their homestead rebate application even if they are not required to file a New Jersey income tax return. To use NJ PC File, taxpayers simply download free NJ PC File software from the Division of Taxation's Web site and then use their PC to complete their return and transmit the information to the Division by modem.

NJ PC File is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from January 14 through August 15. Taxpayers who have questions about NJ PC File can contact the Division's Call Center at 609-292-6400 or visit the Division of Taxation's Web site at: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/.

"An estimated 1.3 million New Jersey residents are eligible to use NJ TeleFile," said Robert K. Thompson, Division of Taxation Director. "It's fast, secure and free. All filers have to do is complete a simple worksheet, dial a toll-free number and enter the information through the telephone keypad," he explained. "This innovative tax filing system will save taxpayers time and effort."

Taxpayers can use NJ TeleFile free of charge from a Touch- tone phone within New Jersey by calling 1-888-235-3453. TeleFile can also be accessed from out-of-State by calling 609-826-4448 from a Touch-tone phone. Returns are accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from January 14 through April 17. Even tax practitioners can use NJ TeleFile or NJ PC File when filing New Jersey income tax returns for their clients provided they maintain on file a Power of Attorney Form from their client.

Users of TTY equipment for the hearing impaired can call 1-800-286-6613 or 609-984-7300 to ask questions about filing their New Jersey income tax returns or to order forms and publications.

For taxpayers who are filing their Federal returns electronically, the way to go may be NJ E-File. Using commercial tax preparation software or the services of a tax professional, returns can be transmitted in an electronic format.

Owe taxes? Go paperless and pay by credit card. Call 1-888-2PAYTAX, toll free, and use an American Express, MasterCard or Discover/Novus credit card to pay the tax due with your personal income tax return, or to make a payment of estimated tax for 2000. Payments cannot be made with a Visa card.
