Division of Taxation Provides Filing Guidelines and Assistance

TRENTON, NJ -- Roland Machold, New Jersey State Treasurer, announced that this year the April 15 filing due date for New Jersey income tax returns is delayed until Monday, April 17, 2000. Machold explained that because April 15th falls on a Saturday, the due date is the next business day.

In addition, Machold said that Division of Taxation representatives will be working extra hours to assist New Jersey taxpayers. The Division of Taxation's Call Center and Regional Offices will extend their hours of operation to help taxpayers with their returns.

The New Jersey Taxation Call Center and Regional Offices will be open as follows:

o Call Center (Assistance by phone on: Income Tax - 609-292-6400)

April 10 - 14 (Mon. - Fri.) 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

April 15 (Sat.) 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
April 17 (Mon.) 8:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Each Regional Office has Division of Taxation representatives who can prepare New Jersey tax returns and answer tax questions. Regional Office staff will also help taxpayers TeleFile their returns or use the newest "paperless" filing method, NJ PC File. Taxpayers can obtain blank forms or drop off their completed forms for processing at the following offices:

Toms River 130 West Water Street

For those taxpayers that cannot file their New Jersey income tax returns by April17, a deadline extension can be requested. However, taxpayers must pay at least 80% of their actual New Jersey income tax liability by the April 17 due date in order to receive an extension. "While we do give taxpayers additional time to file their income tax returns," said Division of Taxation Director Robert K. Thompson, "there are no extensions of time to pay the tax due. Penalties and interest are imposed whenever tax is paid after the due date."

The quickest way to request an extension is to file online using the interactive version of Form NJ-630 located on the Division of Taxation's home page. Requests for four-month extensions that do not require a payment of additional tax may be filed online until midnight, April17, 2000.

Taxpayers who meet the requirements may also request an extension by filing a traditional, paper Form NJ-630, Application for Extension of Time to File New Jersey Gross Income Tax Return, postmarked by the original return due date. Form NJ-630 must be filed by taxpayers who need to make a payment of tax by the April 17 due date to satisfy the requirements for the extension. Those taxpayers who applied for an automatic extension of time to file their Federal returns may receive an extension by including a copy of the Federal application for extension with the final New Jersey income tax return when filed, provided they meet all the other requirements.

Taxpayers can pay their New Jersey income taxes by credit card. Taxpayers call 1-888-2PAYTAX, toll free, and use an American Express, MasterCard or Discover/Novus credit card to pay 1999 New Jersey income tax that is due with either a resident, nonresident, or fiduciary return, or to make a payment of New Jersey estimated tax for 2000. Payments cannot be made with a Visa card. Taxpayers can pay by credit card whether they file a traditional paper return or they are using one of New Jersey's "paperless" filing methods. There is a fee for this service. The amount of the fee is determined by the amount of the payment and is automatically added to the transaction.

Attached is a list of the New Jersey taxpayer information service telephone numbers.
