NJ Saver Rebate Filing Deadline Near

(TRENTON) - State Treasurer John E. McCormac today reminded New Jersey homeowners that they have until next week to file their 2002 NJ SAVER rebate applications. The filing deadline is July 15, 2003.

The Treasurer noted that of the 1.8 million applications mailed out during May, approximately 80 percent have been completed and filed with the Division of Taxation. New Jersey residents who owned a home as their principal residence on October 1, 2002, and paid property taxes on that home are eligible for the 2002 NJ SAVER rebate.

As part of compromise reached with the Legislature on the FY 2004 budget, NJ SAVER rebates averaging $250 will be sent to approximately 1.2 million New Jersey households. Individual or married filers with an income under $200,000 are eligible for NJ SAVER checks. The NJ SAVER program is part of $12.3 billion in property tax relief included in the new budget. All property tax relief programs were preserved and school and municipal aid was increased as the Legislature and the McGreevey Administration worked to close a $5 billion shortfall in the FY 2004 budget.

NJ SAVER rebate checks are scheduled to be mailed to all eligible applicants on or before September 15, 2003. Homeowners who are eligible for both the homestead rebate and the NJ SAVER rebate will receive whichever provides the greater benefit in their individual case. Qualified homeowners who filed a homestead rebate application with their income tax return earlier this year should be sure to file their NJ SAVER rebate application as well. "A homeowner who files applications for both programs can be sure that they will receive the maximum property tax relief benefit for which they are eligible," said McCormac.

Homeowners who haven't filed yet can do so by calling 1-877-658-2972. They can also file online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at www.njsaverrebate.com For more information on the NJ SAVER Rebate Program, homeowners may call the NJ SAVER Rebate Hotline at 609-826-4282, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Information regarding the Program is also available on the website listed above.
