TRENTON – State
Treasurer Bradley Abelow announced that the Division of Taxation will mail
just over one million Homestead (FAIR) Rebate checks for 2005 to
New Jersey homeowners today.
“The rebates will provide some direct and sorely needed property
tax relief to New Jersey homeowners,” said Treasurer Abelow,
noting that this mailing represents the second and final wave of Homestead
Rebate checks this year. The first wave of rebate checks for eligible
senior and disabled homeowners, as well as all eligible tenants, was
mailed in early August. “With this second round, nearly 2.3 million
households will have received rebate checks to offset their property
taxes this year,” he said.
Approximately one half of the state budget for FY 2007, or $15.3 billion,
is dedicated to property tax relief. The Homestead Rebate program represents
$1.1 billion of this commitment.
Eligible non-senior, non-disabled homeowners who filed their applications
by August 15 can expect to receive their 2005 rebate checks next week.
Those who requested direct deposit will have their rebates deposited
directly into their bank accounts. Applicants with incomes of $70,000
or less will receive rebates of $350, those with incomes between $70,000
and $125,000 will receive $250, while those with incomes between $125,000
and $200,000 will receive rebates of $200. Rebates for applications
filed between August 16 and the extended filing deadline of October
31, 2006, will be issued as quickly as possible, but may not be included
in this distribution.
Homeowners
and tenants who still have not applied for the rebate have until
October 31, 2006, to file their applications. Homeowners may
file by phone (1-877-658-2972) or online at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tenants can complete and file a paper
