Kittatinny Valley State Park Programs & Events


KITTATINNY VALLEY STATE PARK
PROGRAMS & EVENTS

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BY 3:30 PM OF THE DAY PRIOR TO THE PROGRAM DATE.  Please call (973) 786-6445.
Programs are free of charge and meet at the visitor center located 1 mile north of Route 206, off Goodale Road in Andover Township, unless otherwise noted.  Adults must accompany children at all times.  Pets are not permitted during programs.  In case of inclement weather, all participants are urged to contact the visitor center to determine whether programs have been rescheduled.  All programs are subject to change.

CREATING A BACKYARD HABITAT
Thursday, April 17

11:00 AM – NOON
For adults.  Join the nationwide trend toward creating a backyard habitat from home! Learn how a few simple choices can make your yard more attractive to many species of birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects living and traveling through northern New Jersey
.  This presentation includes guidelines for pesticide and fertilizer use, avoiding invasive plants, and utilizing native, drought-tolerant plants. 

EARTH DAY HIKE
Tuesday, April 22
4:00 – 5:00 PM
For adults and children ages 6-12.  Join our park naturalist in enjoying the Great Outdoors by taking a hike through the park to celebrate Earth Day. 

GARDEN FLOWER FOLKLORE
Tuesday, April 29
11:00 AM – NOON
For adults.  Learn the “Language of Flowers” during this indoor presentation as we explore the myth and mystery behind our most common garden plants.  Garden tour, weather permitting.

INVASIVE PLANTS: AN INTRODUCTION
Tuesday, May 6                                                                 
10:00 AM – NOON
For adults.  Learn all about invasive plants, how and when they were introduced, and how to control their growth before they take over your yard.  Indoor presentation followed by short walk.

L’IL TYKES HIKE
Thursdays, May 8 & 22                                                                   
4:00 – 5:00 PM
For adults with children ages 5 & under.  Share the afternoon with your little one in the Great Outdoors on this naturalist-guided, 1-mile hike.  Important: All babies must be carried in a front-pack or back-pack.  No strollers or older siblings, please!

MOTHER’S DAY WILDFLOWER WALK
Sunday, May 11     
10:00 – 11:30 AM
For adults and children ages 12 & up.  Join the park naturalist on this informative and colorful walk observing the variety of spring wildflowers in bloom around the visitor center.  We will focus on their identification, as well as discuss their traditional culinary and medicinal uses.

CAT-TALES STORY HOUR
Thursdays, May 15 & 29                                                     
10:00 – 11:00 AM
For children ages 4 & 5.  Share a fun-filled morning with your child and introduce them to nature’s wonders by joining the park naturalist for a story and an activity!

BACKYARD BOTANY
Tuesday, May 20                                                                  
10:00 – 11:30 AM
For adults.  Ever wonder if those “weeds” in your backyard are good for anything?  Indoors followed by a short walk.

MORNING KAYAKING
Friday, May 23                                                                                 
7:00 – 8:30 AM
For teens and adults with previous kayaking experience.  Meet at the Lake Aeroflex Boat Launch located off Limecrest Rd.  Bring your own kayak, PFD, & paddle for this scenic exploration of the deepest natural lake in NJ. 

EARLY BIRD WALK
Monday, May 26
8:00 – 9:00 AM
For adults and children ages 6-12.  Join our park naturalist at the best time of the day to look and listen for bird activity.  Please bring binoculars if you have them.

THE RED, WHITE & BLUE HIKE
Monday, May 26                                                                  
10:00 AM – NOON
For adults.  Moderate, 4-mile hike on the park’s “patriotic” trails.  Please wear hiking boots.

BLACK BEARS OF NEW JERSEY
Saturday, May 31
2:00 – 3:00 PM
Learn about the history of black bears in New Jersey, bear biology, what you should do if you encounter a black bear, and how to ‘bear proof’ your residence.
