Trenton
– Attorney General Stuart Rabner and
Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC)
Director Jerry Fischer today announced the
winning entry in a new program for high
school seniors designed to increase their
awareness about the dangers of underage
drinking, in particular during prom and
graduation season. A script developed by
high school students from the Cicely Tyson
School of the Performing and Fine Arts,
located in East Orange, Essex County, was
selected from more than 50 entries as the
grand-prize winner in the competition.
Entitled
“Proms and Alcohol Don’t Mix,”
this innovative initiative asked high school
seniors to create scripts for a 30-second
television public service announcement.
The winning school’s students are
featured in the spot. The spot can be viewed
on the Division of ABC’s web site
at www.nj.gov/oag/abc/downloads/psa-proms-alcohol-07.mp4.
In addition, the winning students, the runners-up,
and their teachers will be recognized in
a special celebration at Drumthwacket, the
Governor’s residence in Princeton
on Thursday, June 14.
According
to the Attorney General, high school proms
and graduations mark a turning point in
young people’s lives.
“Efforts
such as this one go a long way in helping
young people understand that they can celebrate
these milestones in their life while staying
safe and sober,” Attorney General
Rabner said. “The winning script produced
by these students illustrates the serious
impact underage alcohol use can have not
only on young people, but on their friends
and families.”
Director
Fischer noted that the students were required
to develop scripts that reflected originality
and creativity, while also reinforcing the
message “Proms and Alcohol Don’t
Mix.” “The students who participated
in this program can truly be called role
models for their peers,” Director
Fischer added. “I commend all of the
students who participated in this effort
for their thoughtful entries.”
ABC
also lauds a program that Middlesex County
has run aimed at educating young people
of the dangers of teenage drinking and driving.
The Middlesex County program encourages
groups of students in each high school in
the county to submit PSAs for competition
in a county-wide contest. The contest culminates
in a day-long conference for all participants
that allows the young people an opportunity
to share their submissions with others and
learn more about film-making and the dangers
of drinking and driving. The Middlesex County
program has also worked with schools and
educators to integrate the videos into health
classes and assemblies to communicate the
dangers of alcohol to other students.
