TRENTON
B Attorney General Anne Milgram and Division
of Alcoholic Beverage Control Director Jerry
Fischer today announced the winning entries
in the 2009 “Proms and Alcohol Don’t
Mix” contest, a program for high
school students designed to increase their
awareness about the dangers of underage drinking.
Now
in its third year, the “Proms and
Alcohol Don’t Mix” initiative
asks high school seniors to create scripts
for a 30-second television public service
announcement. The winning schools’ students
are featured in the spots, which will be available
for viewing in early June on the Division
of ABC's web site at www.nj.gov/oag/abc.
This
year, two winning entries were selected for
production: Arielle Russo, Krysta Cullen,
Dan Tomansky and Matthew Hills, students at
Emerson Junior-Senior High School and Talia
Arochas and Eden Aroshas, both juniors at
Eastern Senior High School in Voorhees.
"Involving students in public awareness
campaigns helps young people understand that
they can celebrate milestones in their lives
like high school proms and graduations while
staying safe and alcohol free" Attorney
General Milgram said. “I commend
all of the students for their thoughtfulness
and for participating in this effort.”
A
list of the contest’s runners-up is
attached and can also be found on the web
site. The winning students and the runners-up
will be recognized in a special celebration
at Drumthwacket, the Governor’s residence
in Princeton, on June 10.
Director
Fischer said the students were asked to develop
scripts that reflected originality and creativity,
while also reinforcing the message “Proms
and Alcohol Don’t Mix”
"This
initiative opens a dialogue among students
and their teachers about the effects drinking
can have on their prom experiences,”
Fischer said. “It also helps them
think of ways to have fun at this significant
event in their lives that do not involve alcohol."
The
PSAs are being distributed to local cable
companies by the New Jersey Cable Telecommunications
Association. Director Fischer thanked the
Cable Association for its assistance.
“This
is the time of year when high school students
are faced with difficult choices where alcohol
is present,” said NJCTA Chairwoman
and Comcast Senior Director of Regulatory
Affairs Elizabeth Murray. “We’re
pleased to partner with Attorney General Anne
Milgram and her office to send a clear message
that proms and alcohol don’t mix.”

and Alcohol Don’t Mix” PSA
