TRENTON
- The Divisions of Alcoholic Beverage Control
and Highway Traffic Safety yesterday evening
honored the winners, runners-up and honorable
mentions of a statewide contest designed
to increase awareness about the dangers
of underage drinking, particularly during
prom and graduation season, at an event
at the New Jersey State Museum. The AProms
and Alcohol Don’t Mix” contest
asks high school seniors to create scripts
for a 30-second television public service
announcement (PSA).
Attorney
General Paula T. Dow, Alcoholic Beverage
Control Director Jerry Fischer and Highway
Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky
recognized each of the winners, runners-up
and honorable mentions in this year’s
“Proms and Alcohol Don’t Mix”
PSA contest at the ceremony at the New Jersey
State Museum in Trenton.
Kimberly
Etzin, Angela DePaola, Allison Lotito, Alexandria
Sprenger and Taylor Sisti, high
school seniors at Pascack Valley High School
in Hillsdale, Bergen County, won this year’s
contest. A list of runners-up and honorable
mentions can be found at the end of this
press release. Photographs from yesterday’s
event can be found at: www.nj.gov/oag/abc.
“Engaging
the students in dialogue about the dangers
of underage drinking is the core mission
of this contest,” Attorney General
Dow said. “This year’s winning
PSA did exactly that, by creatively reinforcing
the message ‘Proms and Alcohol Don’t
Mix.’”
At
yesterday’s event, Attorney General
Dow reminded students that including alcohol
with prom and graduation festivities can
have dire consequences, including physical,
emotional and legal ramifications. Possession
of alcohol while under the legal age is
a disorderly person’s offense, and
penalties could include fines of at least
$500 as well as a six-month suspension of
a driver’s license.
ABC
Director Fischer reminded the audience that
this year’s winning PSA is currently
running on cable stations throughout New
Jersey. It can also be viewed at: www.nj.gov/oag/abc/annual-psa-contest.html.
