Basic Needs Information Hub

Most U.S. citizens or permanent residents who work in the U.S. have to file a federal and state tax return with the IRS each year, by the April 15 deadline. Whether you need to file taxes is going to depend on your income, so check if you need to file a tax return.

College students have special tax situations and benefits. Start by learning more about how that affects you or your taxes with this tax information for students. Remember, what you make from your side hustle counts as taxable income. Even if you aren’t required to file, if you worked a part-time or full-time job where taxes were withheld, you may be able to get a refund.

What you need

Getting started as soon as you have all the documents you need is always a good idea.  Here are some of the key things you will need:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Social Security Card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for all family members
  • Proof of income sources like W-2s and 1099 forms (which are often mailed to you by the people you work for)
  • Proof of expenses like childcare and student loans and medical expenses
  • Copy of last year's federal and state tax returns

You may also need other documents, depending on your situation. There are a few free tax preparation programs in New Jersey for low- and moderate-income households, often offered as part of an IRS program called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).
