Securing affordable and reliable transportation can be challenging to find as a student. Below, find some New Jersey programs and transportation options that may be useful.

Key things to keep in mind:

  • If a fee is required, most of these transportation options require exact change.
  • Some may require appointments.
  • Some programs require an initial enrollment or registration.

Statewide

Student Pass NJ. College students whose schools participate in this program can save an extra 25% on an NJ TRANSIT Monthly Pass (only through the mobile app). As of February 2023, this includes part-time degree seeking students taking at least two courses in addition to full-time students. You enroll through your school's website. To check whether your school participates, scroll down this page to "Student Pass - Partner Colleges & Universities." If your school does participate, go to its website and search for "Student Pass" or "NJ Transit" to find the registration page. For more information, call 973-275-5555.

NJ Transit Reduce Fare Program. People with disabilities and senior citizens can apply for reduced fares on all NJ TRANSIT services as well as some private bus companies. Here is the application for people with disabilities, which needs to be completed by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner and then mailed to NJ TRANSIT, Reduced Fare Program, One Penn Plaza East, 5th Floor, Newark, NJ 07105. NJ TRANSIT Access Link ADA Paratransit. Provides public transportation to people with disabilities who are unable to use the local bus service according to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Call 973-491-4224 to apply and interview via telephone or visit accesslink.njtransit.com.

Modivcare (previously known as LogistiCare). This is non-emergency medical transportation for NJ FamilyCare members (New Jersey's Medicaid program) throughout New Jersey. If you need to schedule transportation to a doctor’s appointment, call 1-866-527-9933 or make your reservation online.

Southern New Jersey

Cross-County Connection. A directory of low-cost community shuttles that are available. Select the shuttle for your area to see the schedule. Routes serve Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem Counties. Call 856-596-8228 for more information.

Cumberland County

Greater Bridgeton Area Transit. This option is open to anyone over 8 years old, and has a suggested $1 fare per trip. Here is the route map and the schedule. Hunterdon County

LINK Transportation System provides transportation services to ALL residents of Hunterdon County, NJ. It has "scheduled route" services (Flemington Shuffles, Cross County Shuffles), "demand response" services, and customized transportation services and assistance. Morris County

Morris Area Paratransit System (MAPS). This system can be used by veterans, people with disabilities, senior citizens, and people who live in a rural area. You apply on the website and typically get a determination within 24 business hours. It provides curb-to-curb for medical transportation, social services, and grocery shopping. Suggested $1 donation per trip. Services are provided in multiple languages.
