A settlement that included the performance of a Supplemental Environmental Project with the Department’s Solid Waste Enforcement program created the opportunity to transform the Garden of Hope located in Central and West Wards of Newark, New Jersey into a community urban farm, which will also serve as the headquarters for the grassroots nonprofit Newark Science and Sustainability, Inc. After the two parcels were purchased in 2021, the community garden has since been excavated and redeveloped. The site will consist of a hydroponic greenhouse to support year-round food production, chickens, a teaching commercial kitchen, a cafe, farmstand, and community space for meetings and programming.
So far, the greenhouse and chicken coop have been built and are expected to be in operation in June. Between April and May, a new sidewalk with community garden planters will be presented to the community.
