Phoenix Park Supplemental Environmental Project, Camden, NJ

The Phoenix Park Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) transformed the former American Minerals Site located in the Waterfront South section of Camden, New Jersey, into a 5.3 acre public park with waterfront access. Phoenix Park was initially funded by excess SEP funds from the construction of the Waterfront South Rain Gardens in Camden. Partners in this SEP, Camden County Open Space, and the NJ Environmental Infrastructure Trust, contributied various amounts of money, along with the NJDEP and USEPA, to help fully fund Phoenix Park.

Remediation of the site involved concrete removal, classification of the soil, removal of contaminated soil, construction of pathways, planting of grass and trees, and creation of wetlands, marsh areas and a living shoreline.

The benefits associated with Phoenix Park are numerous. The park provides the residents of Camden with a recreation area which also connects the community to the waterfront. The park itself collects and recharges to the ground approximately 5 million gallons of storm water per year, while the onsite wetlands and the marsh area improve water quality at the same time. The construction of a living shoreline enhances Phoenix Park’s coastline resilience through erosion control assistance, increases in natural shoreline habitat and the support of coastal processes.

The grand opening of Phoenix Park was held on June 2, 2015.
