Vessel Deployment Slated for the Shark River Reef Site

A 58-foot trawler has been slated for deployment November 23, 2010, on the Shark River Reef site located 14.8 miles east of Shark River Inlet as part of the Division's Artificial Reef Program. The vessel is being sunk as a memorial reef for Darren Cardinal, a member of the Hudson River Fishing Association which contributed toward the vessel preparation and deployment. The Fisherman's Conservation Association also contributed to this effort.

The target location for the deployment on the reef is: 40 06.500’ 73 41.300’. Commercial fishers who have gear in this area must move it or risk having it destroyed.
Once the vessel is sunk it will soon become a home for 150 species of fish and marine life, a fishing ground for anglers and an underwater attraction for scuba divers. The vessel will continue to serve the fishing industry for at least another 50 years.
