Program Times:
Program fee is $25.00 per participant. Participants must be 12 years and older. Participants 12-17 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
Salt Marsh at Sunset (Saturdays - for times click on registration link) Arrive at the Sedge Island dock for a 15-minute pontoon boat ride aboard the Sedge Shuttle to the island. Here participants will be provided the equipment needed to spend the evening out on the marsh catching the final hours of daylight on a summer evening. This beginner paddle will take participants through the marsh as they learn about the local flora, fauna, and ecology. As the paddle comes to an end, participants can watch the sun set over the mainland. Bring a waterproof camera for this memorable paddle. No paddling experience required. Register Now!
Clams, Oysters, and Barnegat Bay (Saturdays) Come learn about the shellfish of Barnegat Bay and their ecological importance to the area. Participants will see how oysters are grown in NJ as well as try their hand at harvesting clams. After clamming, participants will have the chance to learn about the structures and functions of these delicious bivalves before enjoying them, either raw on the half shell or steamed open on the grill.
Participants will get wet. Shellfish allergies are not able to be addressed.
Bay Fishing Basics (Saturdays/Sundays) This workshop will teach participants the basics of saltwater fishing in the bay, including rod and reel set up, knot tying, species to target and bait to use. After instruction participants will board the Sedge Shuttle to see what is biting! Participants will target mainly summer flounder (fluke), blowfish, and participate in an ongoing project at Sedge Island to monitor juvenile black sea bass populations. Any keeper fish harvested will be filleted back on the island.
Participants 16 years and older must be signed up with the NJ Saltwater Registry. Each date is limited to 6 participants. For more information contact Karen Byrne at 609-947-1201 or Karen.Byrne@dep.nj.gov. |
