Trenton
- Attorney General Anne Milgram and Division
of Alcoholic Beverage Control Director Jerry
Fischer today announced the winning entry
in the 2008 “Proms and Alcohol Don’t
Mix” contest, a program for high school
seniors that is designed to increase their
awareness about the dangers of underage
drinking.
A
script developed by Kimberly Flores, 18,
of Jersey City, was selected from 50 entries
as the grand-prize winner in the competition.
Kimberly is currently a senior at the Knowledge
& Advanced Skills (KAS) Prep of the
Hudson County Schools of Technology.
Now
in its second year, the "Proms and
Alcohol Don't Mix," initiative asks
high school seniors to create scripts for
a 30-second television public service announcement.
The winning school's students are featured
in the spot, which can be viewed on the
Division of ABC's web site at www.nj.gov/lps/abc.
A list of the honorable mentions in the
contest is attached and can also be found
on the web site. The winning students, the
runners-up, and their teachers, will be
recognized in a special celebration at Drumthwacket,
the Governor’s residence in Princeton
on June 5.
"Getting
students involved in public awareness campaigns
helps young people understand that they
can celebrate milestones in their lives
like high school proms and graduations while
staying safe and sober," Attorney General
Milgram said. “I commend all of the
students for their thoughtfulness and for
participating in this effort.”
Director
Fischer said the students were asked to
develop scripts that reflected originality
and creativity, while also reinforcing the
message “Proms and Alcohol Don’t
Mix”
"This
initiative opens a dialogue among students
and their teachers about the effects drinking
can have on their prom experiences,”
Fischer said. “It also helps them
think of ways to have fun at this significant
event in their lives that do not involve
alcohol."
The public service announcement is being broadcast by cable companies that are members of the New Jersey Cable Telecommunications Association. NJCTA's five members - Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner, Service Electric Cable and US Cable - decided to air the PSA to support the campaign against underage drinking. The five companies reach 96 percent of cable subscribers in New Jersey.
“This is a concern for everyone and it’s especially acute during the prom season when high school students are more likely to confront situations where alcohol is present,” said NJCTA Chairwoman and Comcast Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs Elizabeth Murray. “We’re pleased to work with the Attorney General’s office to get the message out that proms and alcohol don’t mix.”
