Jacob Vanatta was born in Washington,
Warren County, New Jersey on June 4, 1824.
He began the study of law in 1845 and was
admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1849. Vanatta
was the legal representative for some of the
leading New Jersey railroads, and had an extensive
practice in all the courts of New Jersey,
as well as throughout the United States. In
1875, he was appointed New Jersey Attorney
General by Governor Joseph Bedle. He resigned
in 1877 to devote his time exclusively to
private practice.
