Opening a Charter School in NJ

Application Cycles

NJDOE currently runs two application cycles for prospective charter schools. In the March Round, applications are due on March 31st and decisions are made by September 30th for schools that may open the following Fall.  In the October Round (Expedited), applications are due on October 15th and application decisions are made by February 15th for schools that may open in the Fall of the same year. The October Round is only for proven operators that have demonstrated a track record of success.

Preparedness Process

After initial application approval, in order for the schools to open, they must first complete a "preparedness review" through NJDOE. This review determines whether schools have the academic and operational components to ensure successful academic programs, equitability, financial viability and organization soundness. After a review of the applicants' submission of this information in June of the year the school intends to open, the Commissioner will render a final decision in July for charters to open their doors in September.
