Upon successful completion of Steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the Application Process, applicants are invited to NJDOC’s Correctional Staff Training Academy, a 19-week immersive, in-residence NJ Police Training Commission course, with a non-residential option.
Training
At the Academy, applicants receive the following training:
- Physical Fitness – NJDOC’s Physical Education and Self-Defense Program emphasizes physical conditioning, which includes running and various strength building exercises.

- Firearms & Weapons Safety
- Drill & Ceremony
Curriculum
The academic portion of the Academy’s training includes college-level courses (with examinations and written assignments) in the following areas of study:
- Psychology and Sociology
- Emergency Medical Care
- Constitutional Law
- Investigations
- Weaponry & Unarmed Defense
- Communications
- Human Relations
- Physical Conditioning
- Correctional and Police Procedures
During their time at the Academy, applicants are considered Correctional Police Officer Apprentices. Each apprentice is paid bi-weekly, based upon an annual salary of $46,000 (as of July 2024).
