STEP 1 – PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING
- Employment Application
- Initial Background Check – Computer check and fingerprinting prior to Full Background Investigation (Step 3).
- Preliminary Physical Fitness Assessment
STEP 2 – PHYSICAL FITNESS
- Pre-Employment Preparation Program (PEPP) – Voluntary physical training program for applicants to prepare for the official NJ Police Training Commission’s Physical Training Assessment. Numerous sessions are available within three weeks of the official assessment date.
- NJ Police Training Commission’s Physical Training Assessment – Must be completed within 12 weeks of the official Training Academy start date.
STEP 3 – FULL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
- Personal Interviews
- Visits to Residence and/or Place of Work
- Reference Checks (Employers)
STEP 4 – MEDICAL PROCESSING
- Medical Examination – blood, vision, hearing test, chest x-ray and EKG
- Psychological Examination
- Interview with Psychologist
STEP 5 – ACADEMY TRAINING
The Academy is a 19-week immersive, in-residence NJ Police Training Commission course, with a non-residential academy option, at the NJDOC Correctional Staff Training Academy, where applicants receive the following training:
- Physical Fitness
- Academics
- Firearms Training
- Job Training – two weeks of on-the-job training at a correctional facility
STEP 6 – GRADUATION
Applicants who successfully complete all steps will graduate from the Academy and be sworn-in as NJDOC Correctional Police Officers.
