Children are encouraged to attend age-appropriate programs, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Registration is not required for these programs (unless otherwise indicated), but if you would like to bring a group larger than seven people, please call 973-875-1471 to find out if there is room to accommodate you.

Come Fly a Kite
Thursday August 5, 2010
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
For families with children age 5 and up. Meet in the Interpretive Center. $5 parking fee. High Point is often the windiest place in Sussex County. Come take advantage of the breeze and learn to make a simple but functional kite, then head outside and see how it flies! Registration is not required, but if you plan to bring more than three children, please email highpointprograms@gmail.com or call 973-875-1471 so that we can ensure that enough craft supplies are available.

Fledgling Naturalists: Big and Small

Night Insects

Families w/children age 5 and up. Meet in the Interpretive Center. Late summer nights are filled with the sounds of insects. Come learn about katydids, crickets, moths, and others. Bring a flashlight and we'll go on an after-dark bug hunt.

Sun Gazing

All ages. Meet at the far end of the Monument parking lot. $10 parking fee This program will only take place if the sky is cloudless. (Rain/Cloud date Sunday 8/15) Come learn more about the closest star--our sun! Take a look at the sun's surface with astronomy enthusiast, Doug Paddock. By looking through a filtered telescope, you'll be able to see the sun in a way you've never seen it before. Stop by any time between 12:00 and 2:00.

Yoga on the Mountain

Open for all levels. Registration is required, please call 973-702-0488. Come and enjoy the view while relaxing your mind and body! The Friends of High Point are hosting a sunset yoga class in the Interpretive Center at High Point State Park. No previous experience is required, but you'll want to bring a yoga mat. Suggested donation: $5.00. Proceeds support future "Yoga on the Mountain" and other Friends of High Point State Park programs and events. The Friends of High Point State Park is a not-for-profit organization that supports historical, scientific, educational, recreational, and natural resource management activities within the Park.

Dusk/Night Hike

7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Adults/children age 8 and up. Meet at the Sawmill Lake boat launch. Inclement weather may cancel this program. If in doubt, call 973-875-1471. Come experience nature as day slides into night. We'll walk to the Ayers fields and spend some time watching and listening as the birds and animals settle for the night and the stars come out. We'll walk back in the full dark, covering about 2.5 miles in all. We won't be using flashlights; you may be surprised by how well you'll be able to see without one! You may want to bring a blanket or something else to sit on while we are in the fields. Long pants, closed-toe shoes, and insect repellent are recommended.

Monarchs and Milkweed

Families w/children age 5 and up. Meet in the Interpretive Center. $5 parking fee Monarch butterflies and several other insects rely on milkweed plants for their survival. Come beat the heat in the Interpretive Center and watch a DVD about monarch butterflies, then take a walk with the naturalist to search for milkweed plants and discover what critters are living on the leaves.

Lake Marcia: Top to Bottom

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Adults/children age 6 and up. Meet on the patio of the concession building at the beach. Using nets we'll try to uncover the critters that live on the bottom of the lake and will take a walk along the lake (about 1 mile round-trip) to observe other life above and below the surface (frogs and bats are a good bet). Bring a flashlight if you have one.
