Frequently Asked Questions - CE Exemption Based on Experience as a Broker/Broker-Salesperson for 40 Years or More
   
1. What is the continuing education (CE) exemption for Brokers/Broker-Salesperson with 40+ years of experience?
  It provides an exemption from continuing education as a requirement to renew a broker license for a real estate broker or broker-salesperson who has held that broker status for 40 years or more.
   
2. Who qualifies for the CE exemption for Brokers or Broker-Salespersons with 40 + years of experience?
  Any real estate broker or broker-salesperson who has been a real estate broker or broker-salesperson for 40 years or more.
   
3. Can my years of broker experience in another state count towards my 40 years?
  Yes, any equivalent experience in any other jurisdiction as determined by the commission can be included.  It is your responsibility to provide the license history from jurisdictions outside of New Jersey.
   
4. How do I apply for the exemption?
  The required exemption request form can be retrieved from the Real Estate Commission (REC) website.
   
5. What must be submitted?
  An applicant must request the exemption in writing on a form prescribed by the REC.  If requested by the REC, the applicant must provide documentation that corroborates the applicant’s certification as to their 40-years’ experience as a real estate broker or broker-salesperson.
   
6. Will I have to pay a fee for the exemption?
  No, you are not required to pay a fee.
   
7. If I have been granted this exemption, will I have to reapply every year?
  No, once you are granted an exemption you will not be required to reapply.
   
8. How will I know if my exemption is approved?
  You will be notified via email and regular mail when your request is approved.
   
9. If my exemption is denied, can I appeal it?
  Yes, if your request is denied there is a process for appealing.
   
10. Is there a deadline to apply for the exemption?
  Request for an exemption must be filed with the REC on or before March 15th of the renewal year.
   
11. What if I have a gap in my license history?
  The Commission may seek additional information regarding the basis of your request for an exemption from CE if you have a gap in your license history.  Additional requested information may include the provision of sworn statements or testimony under oath by you. 
   
12. How can I get my license history?
  You can obtain a copy of your NJ license history via the REC website link below: www.state.nj.us/dobi/division_rec/licensing/recliccert.htm 
   
13. Can I still take CE courses for my own interest if I am exempt?
  Yes, once the exemption is granted you are no longer required to take CE courses in order to renew your license, but you can take CE courses if you desire to do so.
   
14. Will my years as a salesperson count towards my 40 years of being licensed?
  No, only your years as a broker or broker-salesperson will count towards your collective 40-year qualifications to be exempt.
