TRENTON — Get Covered New Jersey, the State’s Official Health Insurance Marketplace, is kicking off Open Enrollment for the 2027 plan year on November 1 with expanded outreach and enrollment assistance for consumers seeking a quality health insurance plan, the Sherrill Administration announced today.
Residents can view available 2027 health plans, compare costs and see if they qualify for financial help now, even before the enrollment window opens, using the Get Covered New Jersey Shop and Compare tool. All consumers need is their zip code, birth date and income, and they can view the plans available and the estimated amount of financial help they may qualify for to lower premium costs.
Open Enrollment for Get Covered New Jersey, operated by the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, runs through January 31, 2027.
“We know that when President Trump gets involved, everyday New Jerseyans suffer. Tens of thousands of residents have already been priced out of health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and hundreds of thousands more are at risk of losing their Medicaid eligibility,” said Governor Mikie Sherrill. “The Trump Administration and Washington Republicans’ policy changes and budget cuts are making health coverage harder to get and harder to keep, forcing New Jersey families to choose between getting the care they need and paying their bills. I encourage all New Jerseyans in need of health insurance to explore their options under GetCoveredNJ and find a plan that works for them. My Administration will continue fighting to protect coverage, lower costs, and connect families with quality coverage.”
“Despite the federal government’s devastating cuts, financial support is still available to consumers who qualify,” said Acting Commissioner Susan Ochs. “The GetCoveredNJ team and our community partners are here to help New Jerseyans compare their options and get enrolled in quality coverage to protect themselves and their families.”
State and federal financial assistance is available to qualifying residents to help lower their monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. New Jersey will continue to offer state subsidies, called New Jersey Health Plan Savings, to qualifying residents with household incomes up to 600% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Continued Federal Impact
The federal government’s failure to extend enhanced premium tax credits has driven up costs for Get Covered New Jersey consumers. As a consequence, tens of thousands of New Jerseyans dropped health insurance coverage for the 2026 plan year. As of June 30, total enrollment on the State Health Insurance Exchange was 434,700 – reflecting a net decrease of 74,492 enrollees since the end of Open Enrollment on January 31, 2026 when enrollment stood at 509,192.
Additional changes imposed by the federal government will continue to result in higher premiums for consumers as well as additional restrictions. Under H.R. 1 signed by President Trump, certain legally present non-citizens will become ineligible for financial help starting in 2027. Only lawful permanent residents (green card holders), Cuban and Haitian entrants, and Compact of Free Association migrants will continue to be eligible for financial help toward their premium cost.
In addition, new federal rules are changing who qualifies for NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid based on their immigration status. Those non-citizens who are no longer eligible for NJ FamilyCare may qualify to enroll in a health insurance plan through Get Covered New Jersey and receive financial help for the rest of 2026. However, due to new federal rules, beginning January 1, 2027, non-citizens must have a qualifying immigration status to receive financial help.
The new federal rules also impose community engagement/work requirements starting January 1, 2027, for some adults to keep their NJ FamilyCare coverage. If residents do not qualify for NJ FamilyCare due to this rule, they may still be eligible for health coverage from GetCoveredNJ but will not receive financial help toward their plan due to federal requirements.
