Service of Process
 
Please Note:
Until further notice, the Department will accept service of process Mondays and Wednesdays between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you have any questions regarding service of process, please contact the Office of Regulatory Affairs, 609-292-7272, or send an e-mail to: legsregs@dobi.nj.gov

The Commissioner of Banking and Insurance is authorized to accept initial service of process on all foreign insurers admitted in the State of New Jersey, certain banking institutions and non-resident licensees in any civil action brought in any court of this State.


In order to effectuate such service, the following items must be included:
  1. The exact name of the entity being served;

  2. One copy of the Summons and Complaint;

  3. A check in the amount of $30.00, payable to the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance;

  4. And a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Please Note -The Commissioner is not authorized to accept the following:

  • Any court documents other than initial service of process, such as subpoenas, motions, etc.;
  • Service on behalf of insurers domiciled in New Jersey. Such domestic insurers may be served directly, through the appropriate County Sheriff's Office;
  • Service on behalf of insurance groups. You must provide the name of the individual company;
  • Service on behalf of Federally-chartered financial institutions.
