RevolutionNJ School Partnership Program: Revolutionary Schools
Join New Jersey's educational initiative for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution by becoming a Revolutionary School!
A Special Opportunity for Schools and Districts
In 2026, our nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. This historic milestone presents a unique opportunity for New Jersey districts to reinvigorate their K-12 social studies curriculum through the integration of local history, civic engagement and experiential learning opportunities.
The NJ Department of Education (NJDOE) and RevolutionNJ invites K-12 schools and districts to become official educational partners in this momentous commemoration, which will take place during the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years. The activities and supports developed as part of this effort are designed to last beyond the commemoration and be incorporated as curriculum staples to strengthen social studies education in New Jersey for years to come.
RevolutionNJ
RevolutionNJ, a collaboration between the New Jersey Historical Commission and the non-profit Crossroads of the American Revolution, is the official partnership charged with planning and promoting New Jersey’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
RevolutionNJ is dedicated to telling a diverse and inclusive story about America’s past that invites participation from all New Jerseyans, elevating the value placed on social studies education in K-12 schools, and demonstrating how understanding the complexity of our history helps us to respond to the present and prepare for the future.
RevolutionNJ is working with partners throughout the state to develop programming and events that will begin in 2024 and run through 2033, the 250th anniversary of the Treaty of Paris, which marked the official end of the Revolutionary War.
New Jersey’s unique role as The Crossroads of the American Revolution will be showcased to highlight the state’s historic heritage and leadership in teaching about American history in all its complexity.
The commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American revolution is an invitation for students to explore NJ’s revolutionary history and the continuing impact of the Revolution on America. This commemoration will go beyond the typical stories told in our textbooks to reveal and elevate the voices of all Americans.
Through Semiquincentennial observances, our students will celebrate the rights and responsibilities that have been conferred to them as members of a democracy and honor the spirit of the American Revolution through education, research and civic participation. RevolutionNJ and Revolutionary Schools work to empower students to live out the ideals of the American Revolution as local historians and active citizens in their communities.
Conversations about the American revolution enable students to contemplate its legacy, explore the revolutionary ideas of liberty, equality and democracy, and consider the 250-year evolution of America’s founding principles. The anniversary provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their role in maintaining American democracy and ensuring the fulfillment of those fundamental ideals.
Committing to the future of America is the best way to honor and acknowledge our past. Students of all ages can commit to active citizenship in their communities through civic participation, volunteerism and the preservation of local history. These efforts will create a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand both their rights and responsibilities in our democracy while working to preserve and share our diverse American story for generations to come.
