What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual assault is a crime punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. It violates the Military Core Values. Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender, spousal relationship or age of the victim.

Intentional sexual contact characterized by use of force, physical threat, abuse of authority, coercion, or when the victim does not or cannot consent. It includes rape, non-consensual sexual acts, and intimate partner sexual violence.

What are my options?

Unrestricted Report

Any report of a sexual assault made through normal military channels which includes the victim’s chain of command, law enforcement, and the criminal investigative services. Filing an unrestricted report will initiate the investigative process.

The SARC will be notified and assign a Unit Victim Advocate to the victim if desired. Details of the allegations will be provided only to those personnel who have a legitimate need to know.

Restricted Report*

Allows you to confidentially disclose the crime to a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Unit Victim Advocate, healthcare personnel, and/or Chaplains. If you file a restricted report, your chain of command and law enforcement will NOT be notified, and there will not be an official investigation of the crime.

*You may change a Restricted Report to an unrestricted report at any time. This provides you time and space to consider your options. Reach out to your SARC or Victim Advocate to discuss reporting options.

Reduce Risks
  • Approach sexual assault as every Soldier’s and Airman’s issue
  • Practice responsible use of alcohol- Irresponsible drinking is a factor in over 50% of sexual assaults
  • Never leave a drink unattended and drink responsibly
  • Always have a plan for getting home if you are not driving yourself
  • Make sure you have money for a taxi
  • Do not go home with or take home anyone that you don’t know well
  • Use the Buddy / Wingman system
  • Communicate your limitations early and clearly to anyone you may be going out with
  • If someone does go beyond what you are comfortable with say, “No!” loudly and without hesitation
  • Challenge verbal, physical and sexual inappropriateness that can contribute to a climate that allows for sexual assault
  • Ask the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) for help
