Speed Limits For State Roads

Route US 40
(a) The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route US 40 described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:
1. In Salem County:
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is coincident with State Highway Route I-295 from approximate mileposts 0.00 to 0.95.
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is under New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 0.95 to 1.70.
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is coincident with State Highway Route NJ 45 from approximate mileposts 10.02 to 10.67.
i. In the Township of Carneys Point:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the New Jersey Department of Transportation-New Jersey Turnpike Authority jurisdictional line and Route NJ 48 (approximate mileposts 1.70 to 5.43); thence
(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Route NJ 48 and the Carneys Point Township-Pilesgrove Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 5.43 to 6.30); thence
ii. In the Township of Pilesgrove:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Pilesgrove Township-Carneys Point Township corporate line and Sharptown Auburn Road (approximate mileposts 6.30 to 8.07); thence
(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between Sharptown Auburn Road and Green Street (approximate mileposts 8.07 to 8.28); thence
(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Green Street and the bridge at the Salem Creek (approximate mileposts 8.28 to 8.57); thence
(D) Zone 4: 50 MPH between the bridge at the Salem Creek and Route NJ 45 (approximate mileposts 8.57 to 10.02); thence
(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between Route NJ 45 and Pilesgrove Township-Woodstown Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 10.02 to 10.20); thence
(F) Zone 6: 45 MPH between the easternmost Woodstown Borough-Pilesgrove Township corporate line and East Lake Drive (approximate mileposts 11.31 to 11.67); thence
(G) Zone 7: 50 MPH between East Lake Drive and the Pilesgrove Township-Upper Pittsgrove Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 11.67 to 14.40); thence
iii. In the Borough of Woodstown:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the westernmost Woodstown Borough-Pilesgrove Township corporate line and 100 feet west of Green Street (approximate mileposts 10.220 to 10.414).
(B) Zone 2: 30 MPH between 100 feet west of Green Street and Richman Street, except while “25 MILES PER HOUR WHEN FLASHING” signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours when passing through the Woodstown High School Zone (approximate mileposts 10.41 to 11.10).
(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between Richman Street and the easternmost Pilesgrove Township – Woodstown Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 11.10 to 11.31).
iv. In the Township of Upper Pittsgrove:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Pilesgrove Township – Upper Pittsgrove Township corporate line and the westernmost Upper Pittsgrove Township – Elmer Borough corporate line (650 feet west of 4th Street) (approximate mileposts 14.40 to 19.55); thence
(2) For the westbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Elmer Borough-Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township corporate line (bridge at Elmer Lake)  and the Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township-Franklin Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 20.24 to 24.55); thence
v. In the Borough of Elmer:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the westernmost Upper Pittsgrove Township – Elmer Borough corporate line (650 feet west of Fourth Street) and Second Street (approximate mileposts 19.55 to 19.83); thence
(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Second Street and 700 feet east of County Route 648 (approximate mileposts 19.83 to 20.17); thence
(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between 700 feet east of County Route 648 and the Elmer Borough-Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township corporate line (bridge at Elmer Lake) (approximate mileposts 20.17 to 20.24); thence
vi. In the Township of Pittsgrove:
(1) For the eastbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Elmer Borough-Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township corporate line (bridge at Elmer Lake)  and the Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township-Franklin Township corporate line(approximate mileposts 20.24 to 24.55); thence
2. In Gloucester County:
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is coincident with State Highway Route NJ 47 from approximate mileposts 26.71 to 27.21.
i. In the Township of Franklin:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Upper Pittsgrove Township/Pittsgrove Township-Franklin Township corporate line and the bridge at Malaga Lake (approximate mileposts 24.55 to 26.46); thence
(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between the bridge at Malaga Lake and 400 feet east of Elmwood Avenue (approximate milepost 26.46 to 27.42); thence
(C) Zone 3: 50 MPH between 400 feet east of Elmwood Avenue and the Franklin Township-Buena Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 27.42 to 32.74); thence
3. In Atlantic County:
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is coincident with State Highway Route NJ 50 from approximate mileposts 46.35 to 46.97.
NOTE: State Highway Route US 40 is coincident with State Highway Route US 322 from approximate mileposts 51.77 to 64.32.
i. In the Borough of Buena:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Franklin Township-Buena Borough corporate line and 400 feet west of Melini Avenue (approximate mileposts 32.74 to 33.75); thence
(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between 400 feet west of Melini Avenue and Grove Road (approximate mileposts 33.75 to 33.92); thence
(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between Grove Road and Delaware Avenue (approximate mileposts 33.92 to 34.38); thence
(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between Delaware Avenue and 400 feet east of Summer Road (County Route 682) (approximate mileposts 34.38 to 34.60); thence
(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between 400 feet east of Summer Road (County Route 682) and 600 feet west of Route NJ 54 (approximate mileposts 34.60 to 35.06); thence
(F) Zone 6: 40 MPH between 600 feet west of Route NJ 54 and Buena Borough-Buena Vista Township corporate line (Route NJ 54) (approximate mileposts 35.06 to 35.17); thence
ii. In the Township of Buena Vista:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Buena Borough-Buena Vista Township corporate line (Route NJ 54) and 500 feet east of Buena-Tuckahoe Road (County Route 557) (approximate mileposts 35.17 and 35.39); thence
(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between 500 feet east of Buena-Tuckahoe Road (County Route 557) and 400 feet west of Cedar Avenue (County Route 540) except for a 35 MPH school "speed limit" zone when passing through the John C. Milanesi School zone, when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway during recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 35.39 to 38.15); thence
(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 400 feet west of Cedar Avenue (County Route 540) and Holly Avenue (approximate mileposts 38.15 to 38.65); thence
(D) Zone 4: 50 MPH between Holly Avenue and the Buena Vista Township-Hamilton Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 38.65 to 39.20); thence
iii. In the Township of Hamilton:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Hamilton Township-Buena Vista Township corporate line and 350 feet west of Essex Avenue (approximate mileposts 39.20 to 45.00); thence
(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 350 feet west of Essex Avenue and 500 feet east of Walkers Forge Road (approximate mileposts 45.00 to 45.71); thence
(C) Zone 3: 50 MPH between 500 feet east of Walkers Forge Road and 500 feet west of Route NJ 50 (approximate mileposts 45.71 to 46.30); thence
(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between 500 feet west of Route NJ 50 and Route NJ 50 (approximate mileposts 46.30 to 46.35); thence
(E) Zone 5: 40 MPH between Route NJ 50 and 200 feet west of Taylor Road (approximate mileposts 46.35 to 46.78); thence
(F) Zone 6: 30 MPH between 200 feet west of Taylor Road and Main Street (County Route 559) (approximate mileposts 46.78 to 47.01); thence
(F) Zone 6: 30 MPH between Main Street (County Route 559) and River Road (County Route 617); except for 25 MPH when passing through the Saint Vincent DePaul School zone during recess, when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 47.01 to 47.34); thence
(F) Zone 6: 40 MPH between River Road (County Route 617) and 400 feet east of Old Egg Harbor Road (approximate mileposts 47.34 to 47.52); thence
(G) Zone 7: 50 MPH between 400 feet east of Old Egg Harbor Road and the Route US 322-Route US 40 junction  (approximate mileposts 47.52 to 51.77).
