Route NJ 440
(a) The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route NJ 440 described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:
NOTE: State Highway Route NJ 440 becomes New York State Route 440 from approximate mileposts 5.15 to 18.00 before returning to State Highway Route NJ 440 (Outerbridge Crossing to Bayonne Bridge).
1. In Middlesex County:
NOTE: State Highway Route NJ 440 is under Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 3.98 to 5.15.
i.  In the Township of Edison:
(1) For the both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between Route I-95/New Jersey Turnpike and the Edison Township – Woodbridge Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 0.00 to 0.97); thence
ii.  In the Township of Woodbridge:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the Edison Township – Woodbridge Township corporate line and the Woodbridge Township – City of Perth Amboy corporate line (approximate mileposts 0.97 to 2.66); thence
iii.  In the City of Perth Amboy:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the Woodbridge Township – City of Perth Amboy corporate line and the New Jersey Department of Transportation – Port Authority of New York & New Jersey jurisdictional line (approximate mileposts 2.66 to 3.98); thence
2. In Hudson County:
NOTE: State Highway Route NJ 440 is under Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 18.00 to 18.85.
NOTE: A portion of State Highway Route 440 in the Cities of Bayonne and Jersey City was formerly known as State Highway Route 169.
i.  In the City of Bayonne:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey – New Jersey Department of Transportation jurisdictional line and New Hook Road (approximate mileposts 18.85 to 20.66); thence
(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between New Hook Road and 500 feet north of Prospect Avenue (approximate mileposts 20.66 to 21.28); thence
(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 500 feet north of Prospect Avenue and Pulaski Street (approximate mileposts 21.28 to 21.87); thence
(D) Zone 4: 35 MPH between Pulaski Street and the southernmost City of Bayonne – Jersey City corporate line (approximate mileposts 21.87 to 21.91); thence
(E) Zone 5: 50 MPH between the Jersey City – City of Bayonne corporate line 422 feet south of JFK Boulevard (County Route 501) and 422 feet south of the northernmost intersection of I-78/New Jersey Turnpike Extension (former junction of old Route NJ 169 – Route NJ 440) (approximate mileposts 23.12 to 23.65); thence
(F) Zone 6: 45 MPH between 422 feet south of the northernmost intersection of I-78/New Jersey Turnpike Extension (former junction of old Route NJ 169 – Route NJ 440) and the northernmost City of Bayonne – Jersey City corporate line (approximate mileposts 23.65 to 24.10); thence
ii.  In the City of Jersey City:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the southernmost City of Bayonne – Jersey City corporate line and the southernmost intersection of I-78/New Jersey Turnpike Extension (approximate mileposts 21.91 to 22.54); thence
(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between the southernmost intersection of I-78/New Jersey Turnpike Extension and the Jersey City – City of Bayonne corporate line 422 feet south of JFK Boulevard (County Route 501) (approximate mileposts 22.54 to 23.12); thence
(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between the northernmost City of Bayonne – Jersey City corporate line and Communipaw Avenue (Route 1&9 Truck – County Route 612) (end of route) (approximate mileposts 24.10 to 26.18).
