Office of the Public Defender

2026 Priorities

The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender is committed to providing high-quality, client-centered representation while advancing policies and programs that strengthen due process and equal access to representation for the people we serve. Our key initiatives reflect a holistic approach to public defense, one that recognizes legal representation is most effective when paired with meaningful support, responsible innovation, and strong community partnerships.

Holistic Representation

Effective representation extends beyond the courtroom. NJOPD is working to expand holistic defense by integrating attorneys with client service professionals who help address barriers such as housing instability, behavioral health needs, employment, education, and treatment. By connecting clients with community resources while protecting attorney-client privilege, we help improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.

Innovation

NJOPD continually invests in professional development, technology, data-driven decision- making, and innovative practices that improve the delivery of legal services across New Jersey. This includes the OPD Resource Library, a custom-built, AI-powered tool that transforms decentralized knowledge across NJOPD offices into a secure, expert-vetted statewide resource. These efforts help strengthen representation while responsibly stewarding public resources.

Expungement

A criminal record should not become a lifelong barrier to employment, housing, education, or financial stability. Through statewide expungement representation, community clinics, and partnerships with local organizations, NJOPD helps eligible individuals clear their records and move forward with greater opportunities.

Youth Defense

Children require representation that recognizes their developmental differences and unique legal needs. NJOPD's statewide Youth Defense initiative promotes specialized juvenile representation, trauma-informed advocacy, and practices designed to improve outcomes for young people while supporting rehabilitation and long-term success.

Immigration Representation

NJOPD's Immigration Unit advises attorneys representing noncitizen clients on the immigration consequences of criminal cases, helping ensure compliance with constitutional requirements and informed decision-making.
