DEP Awards Federal Funds to Support Volunteer Fire Departments

(03/172) TRENTON - Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell today announced a commitment of $200,000 in federal funds to assist rural volunteer fire departments with rural and wildland fire protection.

Approximately $100,000 was awarded to rural volunteer fire departments with an additional $100,000 grant availability in 2004 through the Volunteer Fire Assistance Program.

"These funds help rural volunteer fire departments save lives and protect property in wooded areas," said Commissioner Campbell. "The matching grants will provide even more training and state of the art equipment to the state's many volunteer fire departments ensuring greater safety in the rural areas of New Jersey."

The $100,000 earmarked was awarded to 50 New Jersey volunteer fire departments and communities from the federal Volunteer Fire Assistance Program in the following counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Passaic, Sussex and Warren. The grants provide funding to organize, train and equip fire departments in rural communities to prevent and suppress fires.

The approved grants, recommended by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, were provided by the U.S. Forest Service Grant Program. Grant recipients must provide a 50 percent match for each project.

The Volunteer Fire Assistance Program was initially authorized in 1972. According to the U.S. Forest Service, of the more than 35,000 local fire agencies nationwide, 75 percent are volunteer and provide nearly 80 percent of initial attack on wildland fires in the United States.

New Jersey fire departments, counties, towns and communities serving rural communities with a population of 10,000 or less are encouraged to apply for the next round of funding by Feb. 1, 2004.

DEP's Forest Fire Service administers the Volunteer Fire Assistance Program. To receive a grant application, call the NJ Forest Fire Service at (609) 292-2977.
