Pawsitive Moments at Our Veterans Homes
Each week, something special happens at New Jersey’s Veterans Homes; tails start wagging, smiles spread, and meaningful connections are made. At both the Paramus Memorial Veterans Home and the Menlo Park Memorial Veterans Home, dedicated volunteer dog-and-handler teams visit residents regularly, offering companionship, comfort, and moments of pure joy.
On Wednesdays at Paramus, residents look forward to Tilly (pictured above), their friendly canine visitor (and her owner, Christine) who moves from room to room and common spaces, greeting veterans with gentle affection and plenty of opportunities for pats, conversation, and laughter. These visits often spark memories, encourage social interaction, and provide a calming presence that residents eagerly anticipate week after week.
On Thursdays at Menlo Park, Hank (pictured below), a different four-legged friend brings similar magic. Paired with a committed owner, Joe, the dog engages residents during group activities and one-on-one interactions, helping to reduce stress, lift spirits, and create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere throughout the home.
While each visit is unique, the impact is the same: strengthened emotional well-being, meaningful engagement, and moments of connection that brighten the day. These weekly pet therapy visits are a powerful reminder that sometimes the most effective therapy comes on four paws—and that simple acts of kindness can make a lasting difference for those who have served.
