Abstract: United Community Corporation (UCC) will implement a comprehensive afterschool program through the 21st CCLC grant at two locations in the city of Newark to serve 170 students in grades 3 through 8 from South 17th Street School and Hawthorne Avenue School. The programs are located at West Side Park Community Center and Newark Housing Authority's Training, Recreational, and Educational Center. Our program model has a foundation in Career Exploration, including college preparation.

Our program model is based on building participants' social intelligence, self-efficacy, and educational prowess, so that they will be more fully engaged in school and life. Enrichment activities will explore careers in arts and culture, health and nutrition, and business and entrepreneurship. Positive youth development practices foster sense of responsibility, problem solving, effective decision making, while activities focus on teamwork, self-reflection, and peer support. A key objective for our program is supporting, nurturing, and encouraging participants in a family-like environment.

An educational specialist coordinates academic lessons and activity plans. UCC is partnering with Project Redirect to offer academic remediation and support by certified teachers and with Impac to provide performing arts instruction. Participants and families have full access to UCC's programs and resources to support their needs, including the food pantry, clothing closet, individual and group counseling, financial literacy, and job training.
