Health and Physical Education

Note: Requirements, passing test scores, and fees are subject to change without notice. All credits must appear on an accredited two- or four-year college or university transcript.
This endorsement authorizes the holder to teach health and physical education in all public schools.
Subject Matter Preparation
Credit Requirements
This endorsement requires a total of 45 semester-hour credits.
Option 1: A minimum of 30 semester-hour credits in a coherent sequence in the subject field of Physical Education. At least 12 of the 30 semester-hour credits must be at the advanced level of study (junior, senior or graduate level). The study of individual sports, team sports and adaptive physical education must be included in the physical education credits. A minimum of 15 semester-hour credits in the subject area of Health is also required.
Option 2: A minimum of 30 semester-hour credits in a coherent sequence in the subject field of Health. At least 12 of the 30 semester-hour credits must be at the advanced level of study (junior, senior or graduate level). A minimum of 15 semester-hour credits in the subject area of Physical Education is also required. The study of individual sports, team sports and adaptive physical education must be included in the physical education credits.

- Health promotion
- History of sports
- Individual, dual or team sport skills
- Nutrition
- Public or community health
- Sport courses (tennis, basketball, golf, volleyball, swimming, soccer, etc.)
The final determination as to which courses will be counted towards the subject matter is based on content standards found in the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
Courses in pedagogy or education are not acceptable.
