Parents and Students

New Jersey's Interdistrict Public School Choice Program (Choice) enables students to attend a choice school, at no cost, outside of their resident district. All New Jersey students are eligible to apply to the choice program, regardless of where they live in the state. Students may attend a choice school in another district and county.

Application Process

Application deadline for 2026-27 school year: November 24, 2025

There are 119 participating choice districts in the 2026-27 school year.

To apply to the choice program:

  1. Visit the Choice District Locator to find information on choice districts.
  2. Review the Choice School Transportation procedures. Transportation of choice students is not guaranteed.
  3. Visit the Choice Student Application Process page for detailed information about how to apply.

Applications must be submitted directly to the choice district. If you missed the application deadline, contact the choice district to find out if they accept late applications. Students who are homeless or displaced may be enrolled in a choice district immediately—at any time during the school year—if the choice district has an available seat.

Choice District Responsibilities

All choice districts must establish and maintain a parent information center that provides information about the choice program and helps parents in submitting student applications for enrollment.

The district must post the following choice information on their website:

  • Enrollment policies
  • Student application
  • Timeline
