Student Athletes

Choice districts cannot recruit or encourage student enrollment based on athletic ability. Students cannot participate in a choice program for athletic reasons.

Students Who Change Schools Without a Change of Residence

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) transfer policy applies to secondary students—including choice students—who transfer from one school to another for reasons other than a change of address. Refer to the NJSIAA Student Eligibility page for detailed information on the transfer policy and the period of ineligibility.

Under the NJSIAA policy, a secondary student who changes schools without a bona fide change of residence is ineligible to participate in any sport in which the student has previously participated at the varsity level for a certain period of time.

The period of ineligibility starts at the beginning of the regular schedule and is the lesser of the following:

  • Thirty calendar days
  • One half of the maximum number of games allowed in the sport by NJSIAA rules

Scrimmages

Any student who is subject to the 30-day period of ineligibility may participate in interscholastic scrimmages at the discretion of the school.

Transfer Form

To prevent possible recruitment or transfer for athletic advantage, a Transfer Form must be executed by the two involved schools and filed with the NJSIAA before any interscholastic participation.

9th Grade Students

The NJSIAA transfer policy does not apply to a student who enrolls in a choice school for 9th grade immediately after 8th grade. This counts as an initial enrollment, not a transfer.

Students Who Transfer During the Second Half of the Season

Any student who transfers during the second half of a sports season, regardless of the reason, is ineligible to participate in any post-season championship competition at the new school. The NJSIAA publishes the season dates each year. Refer to the NJSIAA Sports page to access the dates for each sport.
