Waiting List: Choice Program

When the number of applicants to a choice district is greater than the number of seats available, the choice district must hold a public lottery to randomly select students for enrollment and for the waiting list. When selecting students for acceptance from the waiting list, the district may consider classroom and program capacity.

The waiting list is valid only for the school year in which a student applied. At the end of the current school year, all names are removed and a new waiting list is created.

Students Who Move From a Choice District After the Deadline

A student who moves from a choice district after the application deadline may apply to that choice district as a late applicant.

The choice district may add the student to the beginning of the waiting list, if all of the following are true:

  • The student will enroll in a choice-approved grade or program.
  • The student meets any program-specific criteria.
  • Adding the student to the front of the waiting list doesn't violate the district's enrollment policies.

Students With a Waiver

A student with a waiver from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) may bypass the waiting list if the choice district agrees.
