Statement by Governor Murphy on Stabbing of Two Newark Youth

12/11/2019

“We are outraged and saddened by the tragic loss of Elijah Alvarez, a 15-year-old Newark student stabbed to death Tuesday. We pray for his younger brother's full recovery from wounds he sustained in the attack. Our thoughts are also with Elijah's entire  family, and his friends and classmates.

“While Elijah’s and his brother’s alleged assailant has been arrested, I urge anyone with information into this horrible crime to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. We must work together.

“The City of Newark and the Newark Public Schools are showing leadership in their work to address issues of trauma and mental health among students and communities, and we stand ready to support their efforts. We all must remain fully committed to our violence-prevention efforts, and to ensuring safe neighborhoods for every New Jersey child, in Newark and elsewhere.”
