ICYMI: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ®, North Atlantic Region Celebrates Appointment of AKA Member Tahesha L. Way as New Jersey Lieutenant Governor

NEW HAVEN, CT  – The North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), Incorporated®, today congratulates Tahesha L. Way, Esq., an AKA member who was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey this morning, following her appointment by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Lieutenant Governor Way had served as New Jersey’s Secretary of State since 2018. 

“Lieutenant Governor Way is a woman of integrity who stands ready to empower and support the citizens of New Jersey. Her life’s work is aligned with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s ‘Advocate for Social Justice Initiative,’ which encourages members to act in the best interests of all people through social advocacy,” said North Atlantic Regional Director Elicia Pegues Spearman, Esq. “She is the second Black woman and FIRST Alpha Kappa Alpha member to hold the prestigious post of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor. As a fellow attorney, I am proud of Mrs. Way’s accomplishments. On behalf of the North Atlantic Region, I wish our sorority sister much success as she embarks on this new endeavor.”

New Jersey is one of 12 states in the North Atlantic Region, which spans from Washington, DC to Connecticut to New Hampshire. Lieutenant Governor Way became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha at Brown University in 1991 and served as president of the Iota Alpha Chapter during her undergraduate years. She remains an active graduate member who has spoken at sorority political action events known as “AKA Days at the Capitol,” participates in National Pan-Hellenic “Divine Nine” voter empowerment activities and attends conferences in the North Atlantic Region. We look forward to celebrating her accomplishments at our 93rd North Atlantic Regional Conference, which will be in Atlantic City, New Jersey from February 8-11, 2024.

The North Atlantic Region (NAR) is the birthplace of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, an international service organization founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women and is comprised of more than 355,000 initiated members in graduate and undergraduate chapters in 11 countries. The NAR comprises 155 chapters throughout Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Eastern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
