Statement by Governor Murphy on the Passing of Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger
“Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger cast a towering shadow over the history of American foreign policy. The son of Orthodox Jewish parents who escaped Nazi persecution, Secretary Kissinger steered our nation through some of the most transformative moments of the 20th century – from opening diplomatic relations with China to moving the United States toward détente with the Soviet Union.
“Secretary Kissinger was also a close personal friend and mentor from my early days as U.S. Ambassador to Germany. I have always appreciated his counsel and generosity, especially regarding our World Cup bid. He particularly cherished the opportunity to attend a home game of his favorite childhood football club, Greuther Fuerth, in 2012, nearly 75 years after his family fled Nazi Germany. And, earlier this year, I had an opportunity to wish him well one last time during his 100th birthday celebration.
"Tammy and I send our deepest condolences to his wife Nancy and his two children, David and Elizabeth. I will miss his warm spirit and friendship. May his memory be a blessing."
