NJ GEAR UP Mentors

Mentoring Overview

Overview

Helping Students Succeed

The NJ GEAR UP Mentor is a paid position in which college students support NJ GEAR UP students in grades 7 through 12 from designated schools in Jersey City, Newark, Camden, Paterson, and Trenton in their journey towards higher education. The mentors are examples of the academic goal of NJ GEAR UP and role models to aspiring NJ GEAR UP students.

Mentors work with students during GEAR UP activities such as, one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, after-school tutoring, Saturday classes, and field trips. These activities give students the motivation and preparation they need to take the right courses, get good grades, and go to college.

Who can become a mentor?

If you are a responsible person committed to helping youngsters pursue higher education, and you are in good academic standing, we welcome your application.

Time Commitment and Locations

Mentors work from a college campus site in Jersey City, Newark, Camden, Paterson or Trenton. The dates, times, and hours that a mentor works vary depending upon the needs of the program and the mentor's schedule. Mentors should plan to work at least five hours a week.
