2-113th completes mission in Iraq, heads home for family, friends

By Maj. Jason Fetterolf, PAO, 2-113th Infantry Battalion

CAMP BUCCA, Iraq - Under brilliantly sunny skies, with morning temperatures racing toward the century mark, the 2-113th Infantry Battalion, New Jersey Army National Guard,  handed off the Camp Bucca Base Defense mission to the 2-127th Infantry Battalion, Wisconsin Army National Guard, in a transfer of authority ceremony May 22, eight months after taking charge.

The ceremony’s traditional casing of the colors of the 2-113th Battalion and uncasing of the colors of the 2-127th Battalion colorfully and symbolically communicated the transfer of authority and was followed by remarks from distinguished guests Col. Lindy Burkhart, FOB Bucca commander and Lt. Col. Kevin Vereen, deputy commander, 42nd Military Police Brigade, acting on behalf of Commander Col. David Glaser, Task Force Bucca and the 42nd MP Brigade.

Redeploying after eight months in Iraq, the 2-113th Infantry Battalion has accomplished much, witnessed a marked decrease in violence, and leaves a strong foundation for the 2-127th Infantry to build upon.

“From the time we arrived in Iraq until present, we experienced no indirect fire attacks on Camp Bucca, only one improvised explosive device attack on the routes in our area of operations around Camp Bucca, and no other significant dangerous events in the vicinity.  This represents an 86 percent reduction in IDF attacks and a 92 percent reduction in IEDs,” said Piterski. “I can attribute this regional peace to the outstanding jobs you all have done to show Iraqis how the U.S. is here to help them and to keep the region safe.”

With the exit of the 2-113th Infantry and the entry of the 2-127th Infantry, another chapter in the history of Camp Bucca, the Army National Guard, and the province of Basra, Iraq is written.

The history-rich 2-113th Infantry Battalion mobilized beginning June 20 at Riverdale, N.J., and completed pre-deployment training at Fort Bliss, Texas, before deploying to Camp Bucca Sept. 11, 2008.  The remaining Soldiers in the Garden State’s 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team had simultaneously deployed to multiple locations in Iraq as part of the largest mobilization of the New Jersey National Guard since World War II. All are on their way home after redeploying through Fort Dix in the coming weeks.

Turn it off before you walk out!

In order to comply with TAG goals on energy conservation, users will ensure that all desktops, laptops, printers, and external devices are turned off prior to leaving work at the end of the day. There is no reason to keep the devices turned on for updates during the evenings or weekends. The only exception to this rule is multifunction devices that need to stay on for the purpose of receiving faxes sent after duty hours. In the event that something arises that would necessitate a change in the policy you will be notified.

NOT POWERING DOWN IS A BIG DEAL - In a recent study a company with 2500 PC's can save 91,203 kWh per year, or $92,372 just by using good power management.

There will be scans accomplished this weekend identifying those systems and users that are not in compliance with this policy.

Three N.J. employers named as semi-finalists for 2009 Freedom award

ARLINGTON, VA— Three New Jersey employers have been selected as semi-finalists for the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The award is the U.S. Government’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is significant because only members of the National Guard and Reserve or their family members are eligible to nominate their employers for the award.

Semi-Finalists from New Jersey include the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department, Honeywell International and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

The three New Jersey employers are among 131 semi-finalists from across the nation, selected from more than 3,200 nominations submitted by National Guard and Reserve members or their families for outstanding employer support. From this field, a national review board will select 35 finalists for the award. A national selection board comprised of senior defense officials and business leaders will then select the award’s 15 recipients. The Department of Defense will announce the 2009 finalists in June and the award recipients in July. The 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Awards will be presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., September 17 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Center.

Nutter Run up and running for May 31

The fifth annual SGT Nutter Run will be held on May 31.  Sergeant Sam Nutter (Jan. 28, 1966 – Jan. 2, 2005) was a member of the New Jersey Army National Guard and served in the U. S. Navy from 1989 – 1997.  Each year the New Jersey Army National Guard Officer Candidate School holds a benefit 5k run in his memory and the proceeds raised are donated to a NJARNG family in need.

This year’s beneficiary is Sgt. Raul Aponte of A Co. 2-113th Infantry. The Aponte residence was struck by lightning during a storm in 2008 and caught on fire, leaving the family without a permanent residence and under heavy financial burden. Sgt. Aponte is currently deployed with the 50th IBCT.

Come join us as we band together to give a helping hand to a member of our National Guard family. Fun family events and a barbecue will follow the race.

Visit http://www.NutterRun.com for more information, and registration and donation forms.

DMAVA Green

A car that is 85 percent recyclable? And 95 percent recoverable? Truly a green person’s dream car! But the price tag may stop the average consumer, as green as they may be, from purchasing this new vehicle.

Bentley’s Continental has a price tag of $425,000. For that price it should be noted that the cars do last; more than 70 percent of all Bentleys ever made are still in existence.

The Continental Supersports models can be powered by either gasoline or ethanol. According to a press release, by 2012 all Bentleys will be available with this flex fuel technology.

If you are in the market for a car and being green is part of your consideration, here are the top 10 and bottom 12 green machines, as rated by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

The top ten, from highest to lowest, are:

2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

2006 Mazda3

2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Direct Deposit – A safe and reliable way to receive your pay

From the desk of Lisa Dandrea, Human Resources, Personnel Assistant

This is just a reminder that the convenience of direct deposit is offered to all state employees. It is encouraged that our employees consider taking advantage of direct deposit with all that it has to offer.

Enrolling into direct deposit means having your money directly deposited into your checking or savings account. You’re going to be on vacation on pay day? Tired of waiting for Postal Service to deliver your money? Eliminate that with direct deposit. It is a convenient and reliable way to receive your pay and know it is safe in your account, when you need it to be. And the service is free!

To get enrolled you must complete the "Authorization Agreement for Automatic Payroll Deposits” form, and turn it in to your Human Resources Payroll Department. A copy of this form is available on DMAVAnet under Human Resources – Helpful Forms. Just print, fill out and send to Human Resources. Please allow up to three pay periods (six weeks) for your direct deposit to take effect.

To request a form or more information, contact Lisa Dandrea in Human Resources at 609-530-6888.
