National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

Introduction

Enacted in 1970, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was designed to “require federal agencies to assess the environmental effects of their proposed actions prior to making decisions”.

NEPA holds federal agencies responsible for making decisions on permit applications, adopting land management actions and constructing highways and other publicly-owned facilities. Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) ensure that agencies are following appropriate laws and regulations.

Under NEPA, agencies are able to properly evaluate the social and economic effects of their actions.

NJ DMAVA EMB in collaboration with Stockton University and Rowan University has developed an internship program designed to provide opportunities for a team of undergraduate students to receive real-world experience and on-the-job training in environmental concentrations such as conservation, remediation, wildlife management, and land management.

This team of interns works closely with DMAVA EMB staff on various projects such as conducting water sampling for lead and copper analysis, air emission surveys, ozone depleting chemical surveys, rare species surveys, writing formal reports, and much more.

This allows students to gain valuable career building experience in a variety of environmental concentrations, while completing important tasks for the NJ ARNG.
