Exam Overview

The Board of Tree Experts offers exams for the Licensed Tree Expert (LTE) and Licensed Tree Care Operator (LTCO) to assess applicants’ knowledge and skills. Exams are held twice a year, with details posted online. The LTE exam includes a written and field section, while the LTCO is written only. Passing scores are 70% for LTE written, 65% for LTE field, and 70% for LTCO.

Exam Prep Courses

The NJ Society of Licensed Tree Experts (LTE) will offer four one-day prep sessions for the LTE exam, CEUs, pesticide credits, or general knowledge. Topics include tree identification, anatomy, physiology, insects, disease cycles, tree care, and a sample exam. Space is limited.

Exam Qualifications

To take the NJ Licensed Tree Care Operators exam, submit the completed LTE/LTCO Exam Application, $50 fee, and three reference letters by the deadline. Verification documents must be received 2 weeks before the exam. Candidates must be 18+, of good moral character, and have a high school diploma or 3 years' arboriculture experience.

Exam Subject Matter

The Licensed Tree Experts Examination tests knowledge in various areas, including tree physiology, planting, soil characteristics, pesticide usage, tree health, pruning, pest control, tree climbing, removal, rigging, chainsaw and chipper safety, and ANSI safety standards. The field exam tests tree identification, insect and disease control, and structural issues. The Licensed Tree Care Operator Exam covers similar topics but focuses on general tree care, pruning, safety, and operational equipment knowledge.

Exam Dates

Exam dates for the Licensed Tree Expert (LTE) and Licensed Tree Care Operator (LTCO) exams are held at least twice a year. Specific dates, times, and locations will be announced on the official website. Candidates must register by the posted deadline to secure their spot and ensure availability.

LTE/LTCO Exam Applications

Licensing can be obtained through the LTE/LTCO examinations or the Board may, at its discretion, grant a license through Reciprocity to any person who is the lawful holder of a substantially equivalent license or certification issued by another jurisdiction. The License by Reciprocity Application form must be used in this instance.
