NJMIHIA Doula Training Program
The New Jersey Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority’s (NJMIHIA) Community-Based Doula Training Program prepares culturally responsive doulas to provide trusted, community-centered support for families throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
What Is a Doula?
Community-based doulas provide non-clinical emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Doulas center the needs of the birthing person and family, offering comfort, advocacy, and culturally competent care, often sharing community ties with clients.

What To Expect
Developed “by doulas for doulas,” the NJMIHIA Community-Based Doula Training program combines classroom instruction, mentorship, hands-on birth experience, and workforce readiness support to strengthen New Jersey’s perinatal workforce and expand access to trusted, community-centered maternal care.Since the launch of the curriculum in September 2025, NJMIHIA has trained four cohorts of doulas across the state, a total of nearly 40 doulas.
Training Components
The NJMIHIA Doula Team supports doulas pursuing NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) provider enrollment, helping build a sustainable pipeline of trusted birth workers across the state.
The training prepares doulas to support families across the perinatal period with an emphasis on cultural competence, trust-building, and addressing disparities in care for families of color and those facing economic challenges.
The training spans between 7 to 8 weeks and consists of three half-days of training per week. Training is currently only offered in person, but hybrid models are in development.
Trainees will receive hands-on and classroom-based instruction through the NJMIHIA Community-Based Doula Core Curriculum, as well as:
- CPR and HIPAA Certification
- Cultural Competency Training provided by NJ’s Department of Health
- Three practical birth experiences
The NJMIHIA Doula Team will support each trainee through the entire training and enrollment process.

NJ Doula Learning Collaborative
NJMIHIA serves as the coordinating body for the New Jersey Doula Learning Collaborative (NJDLC).
The NJDLC is the state’s professional home for community doulas, creating a dedicated space for connection, collaboration, and shared learning across the maternal health ecosystem.
Supported by funding through NJDOH, the NJDLC brings together doulas from across New Jersey to strengthen professional development, elevate community-informed practices, and ensure doulas are meaningfully integrated into maternal and infant health initiatives statewide.
